Yes, betting on the Super Bowl is now legal in many states across the country.

As sports betting becomes popular, more states have legalized and regulated it or have sports betting bills in place to do so. Legal sports betting is now in effect in more than a dozen states within the US.

You don’t need to be a resident of one of these states; you only need to be physically within the state’s borders at the time you place a bet.

Depending on the state, you can choose between several online sportsbook options. Many states have introduced legal sports betting industries since 2018.

While betting on sports is legal in many states, not all offer online sports betting.

The most popular sports betting apps in many of these states are DraftKings and FanDuel. Both operators expanded from daily fantasy sports (DFS) to become two of the top online sportsbooks available in any market.

The New Jersey sports betting market is the most mature in the US. The Garden State features a variety of online and retail sportsbooks.

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania’s sports betting market offers a lot of the same options as its neighbor. The Keystone State hosts several mobile sports betting apps and retail sportsbooks.

Besides DraftKings and FanDuel, Fox Bet Sportsbook is also one of the most popular platforms in PA.

Indiana

The Indiana sports betting market is one of the newest in the country. The Hoosier State features several online betting platforms, such as DraftKings and FanDuel. BetRivers Sportsbook is available as well.

PointsBet, Caesars, William Hill and Fox Bet are expected to launch in Indiana soon, too.

West Virginia

In 2019, West Virginia rebooted its online sportsbook offerings when DraftKings and FanDuel launched within days of each other. Both online apps are popular so far, and have helped increase handle in the state.

New Hampshire

Sports betting is legal in New Hampshire; it went live before 2020 began. Unlike most regulated sports betting states, NH hosts only one online option: DraftKings Sportsbook.

DraftKings won NH’s state testing for both online and retail sportsbooks. Its high scores, along with the company’s proposal for revenue splits, earned DraftKings the exclusive contract within the Granite State.

Nevada

Sports betting has been legal in Nevada for decades, and online/mobile sports betting since the start of the last decade.

Nevada is best known for its huge sportsbooks with TVs as far as the eye can see. Almost every casino also has an online betting app that people can use. Unfortunately, you have to go to the actual sportsbook to sign up for and fund the app.

But MGM Resorts, Caesars, Station Casinos and William Hill all have betting apps that you can use in the state, among others.

Betting on the Super Bowl has become even more popular since the emergence of legal online sportsbooks.

Point spread

Betting against the point spread is the most common way to wager on any NFL game.

In Super Bowl 53, the Patriots were favored and were giving a 2.5-point spread. They won the game and covered the spread by winning by 10.

Moneyline

A moneyline wager is similar to a point spread bet, except there aren’t any points involved.

Like a spread bet, you must pick a team to wager on; however, the outcome of the bet is strictly decided by which team wins the game.

The moneyline for each team is based on the size of the point spread. In Super Bowl 53, the Patriots were giving 2.5 points and were listed around -140 on the moneyline. So, in order to have won $100, you must have wagered $140.

On the other hand, since the Rams were underdogs, those who bet on LA would win more than they wagered. The Rams had odds at +115, so a $100 bet would have won $115 if LA were victorious.

Totals (over/under)

Game totals are another popular betting option for the Super Bowl. If you’re unsure of which team will win the game, you can still wager on the game’s over/under.

In Super Bowl 53, the total for the game was set at 56 points. Since there were only 16 total points scored in the entire game, those who bet on the under would have won.

Most sportsbooks offer specific team totals, such as when you wager on the total number of points that one team will score.

Super Bowl 2021 live betting

Live betting is one of the most popular ways to wager with an online sportsbook.

Instead of having to place a bet before the game starts, in-play betting allows you to wager at any point during the game. Live betting is excellent in a lot of ways.

Also known as in-play betting, you can miss the start of a game and not be locked out from betting altogether. It also gives you a chance to see how the game starts before committing any money.

As a sporting event goes on, sportsbooks update the odds based on what’s occurring in the game. You will have updated lines for all of the standard odds, including point spread, moneyline and game totals.

Of course, it depends on who you bet on to win the award, but every player listed under the MVP prop will have plus odds — if you win the bet, you’ll net more money than you had to wager initially.

In Super Bowl 53, Patriots wide receiver JulianEdelman won the MVP. Prior to the game’s start, his odds were around +2000, or 20-to-1. Those who bet $10 on Edelman to earn the achievement won $200 in return.

In Super Bowl 54, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes earned MVP honors.

Even though some bettors can’t wager through an online sportsbook because their state hasn’t launched yet, they do have alternate choices.

One of the most popular ways to have a financial stake in the Super Bowl that doesn’t involve a sportsbook is with daily fantasy sports.

Daily fantasy sports is where operators like DraftKings and FanDuel first made their name. Instead of having a team for an entire year like in season-long fantasy leagues, DFS consists of teams you draft for one day or week.

These games are seen as legal and available in more than 40 states. Like sportsbooks have with prop bets, DFS providers also have special games in place just for the Super Bowl.

FanDuel Big Game Bingo

Big Game Bingo is a free bingo-styled game that FanDuel provides for the Super Bowl. In this game, you can win money for filling out your digital bingo card.

The card consists of props bets for the Super Bowl that include some odd ones you won’t be able to bet on at sportsbooks. These consist of celebrity sightings, songs played during the halftime show and commercials.

Although it’s not easy to win, FanDuel offers participants a prize pool of $25,000. The game has continued to grow in popularity, with more than 350,000 entries in years past.

DraftKings Super Bowl Squares

DraftKings offers a similar sort of free game for the Super Bowl. With DraftKingsSquares, you can win cash prizes for having the right box on your virtual card.

Just like “box pools” that many take part in, you can win if your box matches the score of the game at the end of each quarter.

Every card consists of numbers zero through nine along the top and the side. The two teams playing in the Super Bowl will also be posted, with one on the top and one on the side.

If the final digit of each team’s score in the game matches your box, you are a winner. Typically, payouts are at the end of each quarter, with the halftime and final score counting for more.

Super Bowl betting at retail sportsbooks

Unfortunately, some states in the US still don’t have online sports betting apps.

Some have legalized online wagering and haven’t launched any online sportsbooks yet. Others offer retail sports betting but have not legalized online sports wagering.

New York

New York has a variety of retail sportsbooks in operation, but no online betting as of yet.

Delaware

Online sports betting is legal in Delaware but is currently not available.

Mississippi

Thus, the majority of the US population now has some access to legal betting channels – even if some aren’t the most convenient.

For these purposes, we’ll break down the 50 states into five groups. The groups will divide by how accessible sportsbooks are currently. We’ll start off with the places where you’re just a few taps on your mobile device away from being able to bet on the Super Bowl between the Chiefs and Bucs.

Where legal Super Bowl betting is super easy

In this class of jurisdictions, you can find both online and retail sportsbooks. Most of the brick-and-mortar books are at casinos, off-track betting sites, racinos, and sports stadiums. While there are some differences from one place to another in terms of how online betting coincides with doing the same in-person, you can do either in all of these places:

There are a few caveats that bettors should be aware of in this list. In Mississippi and Montana, online wagering is only allowable while you’re on casino grounds. In Nevada, you have to visit the retail component of an online sportsbook to register your account before you can place bets online.

Tennessee and Virginia in a class by themselves

In Virginia and Tennessee, the only legal choice is to place wagers online. There are no casinos or racetracks in TN. In VA, there are currently no casinos, although multiple cities approved casino gaming last year. When those facilities open, they will have retail sportsbooks inside of them. For now, online books are the only option.

States with retail sportsbooks only

If you’re in Arkansas, Delaware, New Mexico, or New York, your only options are to visit either commercial or tribal casinos. Online sports betting remains illegal in three of those four states.

While there is some ongoing activity to change that in New York, that isn’t the case in Arkansas and New Mexico. Even in the Empire State, the status quo will remain at least through Super Bowl Sunday 2021. Thus, New Yorkers’ options are to either travel to upstate casinos or cross the borders into either New Jersey or Pennsylvania.

In Delaware, online sports betting is legal but there are no online operators currently accepting wagers. Right now, there is also no movement towards launching any mobile books.

So close, yet so far away

In six states, recent changes to the law have allowed for the legalization of sports betting in some way. All six have some unique circumstances, so it’s best to break them down individually.

• Louisiana – Last November, voters in almost all of the state’s 64 parishes went to the ballot box and approved sports betting within the borders of those divisions. However, the state still has to draw up regulations for sportsbooks, license operators, and then roll out the product. That won’t happen before Feb. 7.
• Maryland – Similar to Louisiana, Maryland voters approved sports wagering with their ballots last year but did so statewide. Also just like Louisiana, the state has yet to implement its controls for the activity. Maybe in time for Super Bowl LVI in 2022, MD sportsbooks will be up and running.
• North Carolina – It’s been months since the state legislature approved a change to gaming compacts with tribal casino operators to allow them to run sportsbooks. However, none of the NC casinos have yet to actually start taking bets, and when that might begin still lacks a firm date.
• North Dakota – Tribal casinos in the state have the green light to start taking bets anytime they’re ready to do so. When that will happen remains a mystery.
• South Dakota – Add this to the list of states where voters said yes to sports betting last year. Right now, it looks like legal wagering will be confined to Deadwood casinos. There’s still a lot of work for the SD legislature to get done on this.
• Washington – Like in NC and ND, tribal casino operators already have clearance to offer sports betting. Just like in those states, they haven’t yet opened their sportsbooks. This state bears watching because recent legislation might open the market up to online wagering as well.

There’s another group of states working to get on the same level as those in this group. It isn’t a foregone conclusion in any of them, however. In fact, in some of them, the efforts seem doomed from the start.

Legislative pushes currently ongoing

One state where legalization seems likely this year is Connecticut. It looks like all the stakeholders and legislative partners are on board with the general idea and it’s just a matter of working out the details. Our final group is the rest of the country, where residents shouldn’t expect to see legal sportsbooks anytime in the near future. Not only are they illegal, but there is currently no real momentum to change that situation.

Where sports betting is a pipe dream right now

In all of these states, you have a better shot at winning a lottery jackpot than you do of placing a bet at a legal sportsbook anytime in the next couple of years.
